If a firm’s view on file reviews is that it is another pointless tick box exercise, then they aren’t doing them right! If file reviews are done properly, they can highlight any gaps or potential issues within the firm’s systems and processes. That may not sound exciting at first (nobody likes criticism) but file reviews give firms the opportunities to put things right, not just on a one off case, but for all future cases. Perhaps a file review has highlighted a training need, or a missing step when disclosing important information to the client?

How can you get the most out of your file review process? Cue our file reviews module! We’re not here to tell you how to be critical of financial advisers, we’re here to help support you so that firms understand what file reviews are, sharing our expertise and best practice on showcasing what a great file looks like, and importantly how you can give invaluable feedback to promote good practice throughout the firm.

This module is defined by four units. They are:

  • Understanding file reviews
  • The golden rules and a good file
  • The file process
  • Effective feedback

During this module, you will:

  • Understand the purpose of file reviews and where they fit in a Training and Competency scheme.
  • Summarise the seven golden rules, as outlined by the FCA, when looking at the suitability of financial advice.
  • Outline how to efficiently and effectively undertake a file review and make suggestions about how these reviews can be consistent.
  • Learn how effective feedback processes can identify issues and promote good practice at both firm level and adviser level.
